A member of the political bureau of the Kataeb party, was abducted near
his home in Sin il Fil (East Beirut) on 15 Sept. 1992. At 9,15 , an area under
the total control of Syrian Army units
On that day Khawand was driving from his house to attend a party meeting.
When two B.M.W cars, and a van reportedly intercepted him about 100 meters
from his home. Between eight, and 10 armed men got out of the van, forced him
out of his car and took him away with them.
Despite numerous inquires made by the family and friends of boutrous
Khawand his fate and where abouts have remained unclear.
His son Fady, who was in the house at the time of the abduction, made the
following written statement to Human Rights Watch-Middle East Dep. :
"I heard gun shots after my father left the house, I run out of the
house to investigate . I found my father car parked in the middle of the road
with the driver s side door wide open, and my father nowhere to be found.
One witness informed me that she observed two cars and a van surrounding
my father car. She further stated that the kidnappers ran toward my father,
held him a gun point, lifted him from the driver seat, and threw him in the
rear door of the van".
Some people claim that by kidnapping Khawand , the Syrians hoped to
paralyze the Kataeb Party cadres that opposed Syrian occupation in Lebanon.
Other sources claim that Khawand was kidnapped by "Hizb- Allah"
in revenge of Khawand role during the Lebanese war !
In 1997 a former Lebanese prisoner informed the family that he had seen
Boutrous Khawand in Adra prison, but his information has not been confirmed to
date .
Other liberated prisoner confirm that he is in branch 601 in Mazze prison,
that is made especially for "imp." Prisoners
